blk rvr
Art drives culture. BLK RVR Artist Collective is a group of interdisciplinary practitioners joining forces to drive a culture of African Diaspora self-love as the antidote to a toxic legacy of anti-Black disinformation. We are nurturing the narratives needed to build the abundant shared future our folks deserve.

how it works
BLK RVR is comprised of artists based in the greater Phoenix area who represent the diversity of Blackness. Over the course of six months we will learn, share, connect and ultimately develop new artistic outputs that explore the interconnectedness of global Black identity.
-
why a collective?
BLK RVR will serve as a safe space for sparking and strengthening artist relationships while also serving to inspire and educate the community on the power of Diaspora connection, through the lens of an emergent framework we call “Black Migratory Identity.”
our organizing framework:
Black migratory identity
Migration is natural. Displacement is not. The Black Migratory Identity framework is rooted in the political movement known as Pan-Africanism, which seeks to strengthen connections between indigenous and Diasporic Afro-descendant communities.
The Black Migratory Identity framework invites us to examine the forces that have caused us and our forebears to move around the globe, whether by choice or by force. BLK RVR artist collective will create and learn together through this lens, exploring the questions and insights it sparks within us.
where do we live? what brought us here? as we consider the answers, we begin to see the systemic forces that have shaped Black life – and the path to getting our folks free.
the details
In-person Orientation on June 1: This is a public event that our team is hosting at ASU Art Museum, designed to bring together artists and activists. At this event, you'll learn about Black Migratory Identity, network with fellow members and others from the community who care about Black arts and culture. Afterward, members of the artist collective will have a brief happy hour together at Cafe Lalibela nearby.
Dreaming and Creating Sessions: We will gather in-person for dreaming and creating sessions where members will learn about Black Migratory Identity, a framework to understand how Black peoples around the world are connected to each other through a history of Afro-descendance, migration, displacement, resistance and healing. After the dreaming phase, we'll turn you loose to create art that brings this framework to life (individually or collectively). We'll then ask that you plan to share your artistic creations this during the Black River Thursdays showcase series presented by Black River Life.
Performances: Black River Thursdays is a showcase series that was started last year by the Black River Life team. This year's series will be very intimate and curated. Upon completion of the cycle, all BLK RVR Artists will be honored at the final Black River Thursdays on showcase.
What to expect: Overall, you can expect to participate in a small but mighty group of curious creatives who represent the diversity of Blackness in the Valley, hailing from different places around this country and the world. We are paying a nominal honorarium, and the true value is the chance to connect + create with like-minded people.
